Background, experience, and ethos: Milinda enrolled as an Attorney-at-Law in 2002. In his first 2 years in practice, Milinda specialised in commercial and corporate litigation at one the oldest and leading law firms in Sri Lanka and. Since 2004, Milinda has worked as a solo practitioner as well as very closely and regularly with two President's Counsel and other lawyers. In his own practice, where necessary, Milinda works with very experienced specialists to ensure his clients receive well-rounded service.

From his insights in litigation, Milinda firmly believes that, particular in Sri Lanka, a negotiated solution is far better for a client and that litigation should be the very last resort and avoided as far as possible. However, handled creatively and with finesse, litigation is a valuable tool.

Further, his experience is that, many disputes are the result of the difference between the operations and executions and the contractual terms. This, coupled with the practical difficulties of litigation in Sri Lanka, prevent businesses succeeding. It is for this reason that Milinda tries to ensure that not only his client, but the counter party, are of one-mind on the operational aspects and execution of contractual terms before drafting any contracts.

Preventing or, at least, reducing operational and execution differences and, mitigating risks of non-compliance, and assisting contracting parties equitably achieve their mutual goals should be the goal of legal advisors. As for litigation in Sri Lanka, Milinda still believes that solutions still exist within Sri Lanka's legal system and, if properly managed, will yield the results desired by clients and society at large.
